To build relationships with residents and prevent crime, the New Haven Police Department works hard to provide education on best ways to avoid becoming a victim of a crime. The ideal goal is to create a symbiotic relationship where residents feel comfortable going to their officers, and our officers know members throughout the community. While we want to prevent crime overall, we realize that crime cannot be totally eliminated.
Our police officers' goals when it comes to engagement are:
Conducting calls to New Haven neighborhoods so that residents have a relationship where they feel comfortable to report crime or possible problem areas.
Touch base with community leaders and associations to discuss any neighborhood issues, areas of concern, or upcoming events.
Provide regular presence and visibility in the neighborhood.
Attend block parties, Night To Unite, and neighborhood events when possible.
Ways We Educate
All of our officers are well-versed in crime prevention and are willing to help any resident in need of crime prevention advice:
School field trips to the New Haven Police Department to discuss crime prevention
Supporters of the "Officer Phil Program" to help provide educational resources to local schools
Provides home checks to residents that will be gone for longer periods of time
