New Haven, IN — The City of New Haven will soon join communities across the nation in honoring the memory of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, with the Patriot Day of Caring. This day of service provides an opportunity for residents, businesses, and community partners to come together in remembrance and give back through meaningful acts of service.
The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the 909 Community Gathering Place, located at 909 Main St., New Haven, where volunteers from SDI La Farga Copper Works and Lake City Bank, led by the United Way of Allen County, will participate in a community beautification project. The project will include trash removal, cleanup, and wall painting, all with the goal of improving a valuable space for New Haven residents.
Additionally, the city, in partnership with Dupont Hospital, will host a Car Seat Safety Inspection Clinic with Healthier Moms and Babies at Fire Station No. 3, located at 910 Hartzell Rd., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Certified technicians will inspect and install car seats for pre-registered families, ensuring they have the knowledge and resources they need to keep their children safe. Technicians will give new car seats to participating families who don’t already have one, made possible by generous contributions from Dupont Hospital and Indiana University, while Healthier Moms and Babies will bring The Hopper to distribute free diapers.
“Like many of our initiatives, Patriot Day began in New Haven as a way to reconnect following the isolation of the pandemic and make a positive difference on such a solemn day,” said New Haven Mayor Steve McMichael. “Our Code Enforcement Officers saw residents in need, and we knew we had to find a way to mobilize the community and serve one another. Our team is dedicated now more than ever to extend a helping hand to our neighbors, on September 11th and every other day.”
While Patriot Day is a day of service throughout the United States, the city has partnered with the United Way of Allen County to further rally community support and set an example of collaboration. We hope this event will inspire residents to join together and engage with the community through acts of service.
