Utility Providers

New Haven's infrastructure, streets and curbs, storm and sanitary sewers, bridges, water mains, hydrants, pumping stations and wells, are all in the care of the employees of New Haven's Public Works Department. Public Works strives to maintain the City's high standards by working to produce a maximum efficiency, quality product that enhances the image of New Haven alongside the quality of life. With 127 total cross-trained employees that are equipped to handle all 4 utilities, the City of New Haven is in the best of hands.

Water

One of the City's major goals is to continue to provide our residents with safe and sustainable drinking water while contributing to the economic, environmental, and social development of our community. In order to achieve this goal, we have services put into place that work to provide residents with safe drinking water including fire hydrant repairs and flushing, GPS locater of all City utilities, in-house service calls, meter readings, service line and water main repairs, water turn-on and shut-off, and weekly water quality testing.

For the past two years, New Haven has made a commitment to replacing the aging underground infrastructure. Improving reliability is our focus, and we have replaced miles of water mains throughout the City to address any and all infiltration issues. New Haven's water is purchased and tested from nearby Fort Wayne, Indiana. Fort Wayne's source of water comes from the Saint Joseph River. Water flows into the Saint Joseph River from more than 694,000 acres in Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and a small part of South Central Michigan. Through a series of dams and pumps, New Haven draws an average of about 1.1 million gallons of water each day from the Three Rivers Filtration Plant for distribution to your home. Before making it to your home, the raw water is treated, filtered, and tested. For more information on the testing methods, you can contact the Water Quality Manager of the Three Rivers Filtration Plant at 260.427.1303, or visit the City of Fort Wayne's Utilities website linked here Version OptionsPublic UtilitiesHeadline

Hydrant Flushing

The City values safety as a top priority and our Public Works Department routinely flushes our fire hydrants to ensure that our systems are working properly. Flushing hydrants is also necessary to remove any type of naturally occurring sediment that may have settled in the bottom of the water mains, which is where the water for fire hydrants comes from.

Sewer

New Haven's Sewer Division is housed under the Public Works Department and handles the operation of the City's sanitary sewer system. Our sewer division ensures safe and reliable operations, and minimizes potentially hazardous and costly sewer backups. Our team regularly works to televise and clean sewer lines, complete daily inspections and repairs to the City's 11 sewer lift stations, and works to eliminate "I and I," or Inflow and Infiltration, to tackle issues within our service areas.

Stormwater

In order to prevent pollution and drain blockage from storm drains that have been left untreated, our Stormwater Division maintains the City's storm drains by doing preventative maintenance. This includes street sweeping, clean-up after a storm, outfall inspections, leaf composting, and addressing any other drainage issues that concern residents, both commercial and residental. Taking preventative measures can help the City avoid an increase in pollutants that stem from increased runoff from heavy metals, nutrients, pathogens, petroleum, hydrocarbons, sediments, pesticides, and trash. You can find more information about the City's processes and the ways you can help to keep our City and environment as clean as possible on our stormwater page, linked here Version OptionsPublic UtilitiesHeadline Stormwater Stormwater
