The New Haven Police Department is dedicated to providing professional law enforcement services while working to obtain justice and equality for all the residents and visitors in our city. It is a requirement that the New Haven Police shall treat all people fairly, impartially, and with respect and dignity while maintaining the integrity of the profession.

New haven's dedication to keeping the community safe means that it is necessary for us to impose a strict selection process when determining who will protect our citizens. Some of those requirements include:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • No felony or criminal convictions
  • Shall not have received anything other than an honorable discharge from the military, or other discharge with honorable conditions
  • Be at least 21 years of age and less than 36 years of age at the time of appointment to the department unless already an Indiana Police PERF member
  • Must be a high school graduate as evidenced by a diploma issued by accredited high school by the department or agency of the State authorized to accredit high schools or have certification of an equivalent education
  • Reside in Allen County or an adjacent county and maintain residential telephone service at time of appointment
  • Possess a valid driving license from State of Indiana at time of appointment
  • Agree to provide certified current personal credit background report upon request

Hiring Process

Candidates will expect the following when going through the hiring process with the New Haven Police Department:

  • Field training officer programs
  • Polygraph exam
  • Voice-stress exam
  • Drug screening exam
  • Pass a general aptitude test
  • Pass a physical fitness assessment

Salaries in 2023 for the Police Department range from $50,197.08 to $58,677.97. Longevity bonuses for every 5 years of service are also offered.

  • 24 full-time law enforcement officers
  • 7 full-time and 11 part-time dispatchers
  • 3 school crossing guards
  • 1 part-time and 1 full-time code enforcement officers
