Contestants must write an original essay with limited guidance from others.
The City of New Haven will have the right to edit, publish or otherwise duplicate any essay that has been submitted.
Due to the number of entries received, only winners will be contacted with the results.
There is no entry fee for this contest.
Section II - Qualifications for Contestants
The competition is open to all students in grades 9-12. Students must either live in New Haven, attend East Allen County Schools or be homeschooled students.
Contestants may submit only one essay during this competition.
Section III - Contest Rules
Essays must address the official contest topic. Students are also encouraged to use personal experiences to demonstrate leadership in the community.
Essays must be a minimum of 1,000 words and not be more than 1,200 words.
Essays must be in Word format, 12 pt font, typed, double-spaced and on white letter-sized paper. Originality, grammar and spelling will also be factors in judging.
Any quotations or copyrighted material used in the essays must be identified properly. Failure to identify non-original material will result in disqualification. *This includes any A.I. material.
Section IV - Judging
Judging will be completed by a panel of local judges.
Section V – Submitting Entries Judging
Valid entries must include name, school, grade, contact number and email address.
Entries must be submitted by email to: email@example.com. Entries mailed or dropped off will not be accepted.
Deadline to enter is Friday, March 15th at 5:00 p.m. Winners will be notified by the Mayor’s Office.
Awards will be presented during the City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.
Section VI - Use of Competition Information
All competition entries become the property of the City of New Haven and the City of New Haven reserves the right to use any and all information related to the contest, including submissions provided by the contestants, for editorial, marketing and any other purpose, unless prohibited by law. The City of New Haven is under no obligation to use any submission or return the submissions to participants.
Section VII - Limitations of Liability
By participating in the competition, you agree to release the City of New Haven and their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, employees, directors, officers, and agents from any and all liability, claims or actions of any kind whatsoever for injuries, damages or losses to persons and property which may be sustained in connection with your participation in the competition. The City of New Haven is not responsible for late, lost or misdirected email or for any computer, online, or technical malfunctions that may occur. If for any reason, the competition is not capable of running as planned, the City of New Haven may cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the competition.
