Street Responsibility

New Haven's streets are maintained by the street crew who work for the Public Works Department. They are responsible for providing maintenance of public street and property to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Signs and Signals

Public Works is responsible for ensuring safe movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists throughout the City's right-of-way. They handle:

  • Crosswalk painting
  • Installation and maintenance of street signs involving street names, stop signs, speed limits, yield signs, pedestrian crossings, etc.
  • Pavement markings: center lane lines, bike lanes, turn lanes, arrows, etc.

  • Leaf pick-up
  • Snow removal
  • Pothole repair
  • Guardrail repair
  • Work-zone traffic control
  • Landscaping within the City's rights-of-way
